What’s Your Number – Intelligence Quotient (I.Q.)?
Yes, being smart could propel you to a life of success. To determine your intelligence, most people take an IQ (intelligence quotient) test to gauge their ability to think logically for the purpose of using inductive and deductive reasoning to solve a variety of problems.
After completing this standardized test, you will receive your IQ number which will usually fall within the range shown in the table below:
40 – 54 = Severely Contested
55 – 69 = Challenged
70 -84 = Below average
85 – 114 = Medium
115 – 129 = Above average
130 – 144 = Gifted
145 – 159 = Genie
160 – +175 = Extraordinary Genius
In general, people who score 115 and above should be able to do any job without any restrictions or difficulties. After taking the test myself, I received a score of 137 and discovered that I was adept not only in math and spatial relationships, but also in English. Please note that approximately 50% of people who complete the IQ test receive scores between 90 and 110; 2.5% of the others receive scores around 130; only 0.5% of people score above 140.
For fun, here’s a list of extraordinary geniuses getting +200 on their IQ tests, along with some of their achievements:
Guillaume James Sidis
IQ = 250 – 300
Achievements:
– Went to high school when he was 6 and graduated in 7 months.
– Studied at Harvard at age 11 and majored in math.
– Knows more than 40 different languages.
Terence Tao
IQ = 225 – 230
Achievements:
– Learned basic arithmetic at age 2 and took college-level math at age 9.
– Published his first assistant paper at 15 and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at 16.
– Mathematician specialized in theories of random matrices and analytic numbers; harmonic analysis; additive combinatorics; Ramsey theory; partial differential equations.
Christophe Hirata
IQ = 225
Achievements:
– Completed university-level courses in physics and mathematics at age 12.
– Won the gold medal in International Science Olympiad at 13.
– Worked with NASA on the Mars project at age 16.
So if you haven’t taken the test to find out what your IQ number is, I highly recommend that you take some time to complete the assessment to assess where you stand intellectually compared to the general public. Although a variety of IQ tests are available, such as the Stanford Binet and the Woodcock-Johnson tests of cognitive abilities, I would suggest that you practice first with the free online IQ tests:
-
IQTest.com
-
FreeIQTest.net
-
Free-IQ-Test.FM
Remember that while IQ tests are used as a gauge to determine your general intelligence, they don’t claim to tell the whole story of your abilities in creativity, social competence, etc. Personally, I prefer to use both my IQ test scores and my grade point average (GPA) as a benchmark because your GPA covers other areas that are not part of standard IQ tests.
To end this article, I leave you with a quote from Ronald Reagan who once said that “there are no great limits to growth because there are no limits to human intelligence, to imagination and wonder”.
Good luck to you on your IQ tests and I hope you do your best to keep learning and growing every day!
