The Problem With Attempting to Teach Individual Students Using Multiple Intelligent Theory
At school, I always got good grades, maybe because I had a good memory. Yet I reject the idea that rote memorization is the best way to teach young people the facts of life, or teach them how to think, a skill that is needed in everything they do, while information they get from a class or subject may never be used, or only in certain areas of human activity, or perhaps at their job. I would like to discuss with you the importance of teaching children to think.
Now, for this article, I would like to recommend a very good book that I would like you to read, so that we can have a proper dialogue in the future. It’s a book that I personally own, and I found it rather intriguing, but I also have some comments and some concerns. The name of the book is;
“So Each May Learn – Integrating Learning Style an Multiple Intelligences” by Harvey F. Silver, Richard W. Strong and Matthew J. Perini, published by ASCD – Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Alexandria VA, 2000, 124 pages, ISBN: 0-87120-387-1.
The book rightly suggests that different children think in different ways, and so if we want to teach all children, we need to cover many different ways of teaching, so that every child can get it. Because children have specific intelligences, according to Howard Gardner’s “multiple intelligence theory”, the book also suggests when teaching math, for example, that a teacher uses visuals, sounds, problem words, as well as equations. This way, children who think differently can still learn how to solve math problems without feeling stupid, or decide that math is too difficult a subject rather than learning how to solve a certain type of math problem.
Makes sense, right? Of course, however, maybe it makes sense to teach every child how to think using all the different methods, so when they go into a math class they understand the logical method of thinking, or when they go into a music lessons, they understand that . When they go to physical education, they learn these types of intelligences, do you know what I mean? If we focus on teaching children how to think and all the different ways of thinking, then we don’t have to worry about children and their thinking style when they go to learn a particular subject.
All they really have to do is start thinking in a different way that matches this class work.
