GMAT Vs GRE – Which One Should You Take?

Recently, some business schools have decided to accept the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) score or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score as part of an MBA candidate’s application.

Historically, the GMAT is taken by students applying to business school, while those wishing to pursue non-business graduate studies take the GRE.

While the GMAT is still the most widely accepted standardized test for aspiring students, a few business school programs have chosen to start accepting the GRE score as a way to expand their candidate pool by encouraging an increase in applications from those with diverse backgrounds and experience. backgrounds, and those who have difficulty getting to a GMAT testing facility.

Here are some other interesting facts about why business schools are starting to accept the GRE:

-Price: The GRE is cheaper than the GMAT. The GRE costs $140, while the GMAT costs $250). Higher GMAT test fees could limit the number of students applying to business school programs, especially considering the cost of multiple retakes and separate prep programs/books.

-Streamlined applications: The GRE is taken by students applying to various graduate programs, which means that students will not have to study, pay, and pass another standardized test to apply to a business school.

-Test Centers: The GRE is given in more places around the world than the GMAT. Schools are always on the lookout for more diverse applicants, and GRE acceptance could lead to more applicants from around the world who may not have the financial means or time to travel to a GMAT test center.

Although the GRE and GMAT are somewhat similar, the differences between the two exams are most apparent in an analysis of their scoring, average scores, and verbal and quantitative sections.

-Total score:

o GRE – Like the SAT, the GRE consists of verbal and quantitative sections, each of which can earn you between 200 and 800 points. The writing section can score you anywhere between 0 and 6. For admission, most universities do not consider the written GRE score as much as the verbal and quantitative scores. Keep in mind that GRE scores are factored in with your undergraduate GPA, admissions interview, extracurricular activities, and more. The average GRE score across all subject areas is 1050, while the average GRE score for a Harvard student is 1330.

o GMAT – The GMAT is scored from 200 to 800 and has verbal and quantitative sessions, while the writing section is scored separately, with scores ranging from 0 to 6. The average GMAT score is around 500, while the top ten business school students averaged 720.

-Writing section: The writing sections of the GRE and GMAT tests are similar and consist of two essay questions, one asking you to analyze an argument and the other asking you to analyze a problem.

– Verbal section: The verbal section of the GRE consists of analogies, antonyms, sentence completion and reading comprehension passages. And unlike the GMAT, the GRE tests vocabulary knowledge out of context. The GRE is generally considered to have a more difficult verbal section than the GMAT. The verbal section of the GMAT includes questions for reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction. Both tests are administered in English. If you are not an English speaker, I recommend that you take the GMAT because its verbal section is easier to prepare.

– Quantitative section: The quantitative section of the GRE is widely recognized as less difficult than the quantitative section of the GMAT. Unlike the GMAT Math section, the GRE currently does not have a data sufficiency section and overall requires a lower level of math proficiency. However, the creators of the GRE, the Educational Testing Service (ETS), have announced that they are adding more data interpretation questions to its test and increasing the overall difficulty level of the GRE.

In general, top business schools look for fairly high percentile scores on the GRE and GMAT, especially in the quantitative section. Some schools require at least a 50th percentile score in the quantitative section of either test for admission to their program.

When deciding whether to take the GMAT or GRE, you need to consider whether the schools you are applying to accept the GRE instead of the GMAT. If so, examine your academic strengths and weaknesses. In general, if you have excellent quantitative skills, examine the GMAT further. If you have exceptional writing and verbal skills with less than stellar quantitative skills, consider taking the GRE. Remember that both tests are difficult and will require a significant amount of study no matter which test you choose. Make sure you prepare with an excellent GMAT Prep or GRE Prep program.
