## Why You Should Play Math Games

Math games are useful for developing number sense. Number sense refers to an individual’s perception of numbers and the operations used to manipulate numbers. It also involves the ability to apply such operations in real numerical calculations and to devise new and simpler ways of solving difficult mathematical problems.

Math games, by improving our interaction with numbers, make people alert to perform, easily and accurately, the different daily activities associated with numbers. Such actions could count your change, quickly determine which product prices are the cheapest and by how much. Number sense has many applications in real life.

The five reasons why math games and number sense are important are:

1. To develop the ability to mentally calculate spontaneous mathematical problems. In school, we are taught mathematical calculation. Math games stimulate the person’s ability to arrive at their own intuitively correct answer to math problems.

2. To develop the ability to estimate spontaneous values. The ability to calculate intuitively leads to the ability to arrive at a more than less accurate approximation of some fixed value.

3. To provide a keen sense of judgment about the magnitude of numbers. Visualizing magnitudes converts the abstract into spatial objects that can be more easily manipulated.

4. To recognize the relationship of part to whole and understand the concepts of place value.

5. To develop accuracy and persistence in problem solving

The formal mathematical procedures we learn in math classes are learned by rote and applied from memory. Merely memorizing mathematical principles has no positive value for learning. Math games apply the mind to spontaneous and dynamically new math problems. It produces the ability to solve problems by sharpening the person’s conceptions of the relative proportion of parts constituting a whole. This facilitates the development of solutions.

Mathematics is the path to anywhere you want to go and any dream you want to achieve. So, if you are a math outsider, maybe you should start playing math games. You can start from beginner level with easy and quickly solved problems. As your conception of numbers improves, you can choose the more difficult ones. Again, stay at this level until you have mastered it and are able to easily solve math problems at this level. Then go to the next difficulty level. You’ll soon realize that you’re not so bad at counting after all. Math games aren’t just games, they’re tools for learning those practical skills that will be invaluable to anyone in pursuit of life’s goals.
