The test is designed for middle school students trying to enter high school, so the majority of applicants are eighth graders, although some seventh graders also take the test. For the most part, a typical medium curriculum will have exposed students to content tested on the HSPT, although a basic understanding of algebra and geometry will be required for the math sections.

Unlike most other standardized exams, the HSPT does not have national administration dates. Private schools administer the HSPT as part of the application process. According to the STS website, students should not take the test more than once. In fact, if a student takes the test more than once, the STS indicates that the lower of the two scores should be taken into consideration. Registration and test schedules are managed school by school; parents should contact the schools their children are applying to for specific dates and deadlines. The STS does not manage the registration for the exam, it is also managed school by school.

The HSPT is comparable in content and format to the ISEE Upper Level, another private school entrance exam. Content wise, the biggest difference between the two tests is that there is no HSPT test. The HSPT is primarily used by Catholic private schools; ISEE is used by more private schools. In addition, ISEE has three levels: lower, middle and upper, which correspond to the class in which the student enters; the HSPT is reserved for future high school students.

As with any standardized test, preparation is key to success. There are a few HSPT study guides available on the internet and in stores; If, after reviewing the concepts and practical issues, you and your student decide that additional help would be beneficial, then consider professional HSPT exam preparation.
