Learn to Use an Online Tool For Gathering, Compiling, and Evaluating Data by Surveying Your Students
What do you really know about your students when they walk through the door on the first days of school? Do you want to know more? Have you ever had to collect data from your students and hand them sheets of paper to fill in, then try to compile the results?
As a media specialist in an elementary school, I interview all my students in grades three through six the first few days of school to get background information while getting to know the kids. Additionally, I model for students (and teachers!) how to easily collect, compile and evaluate data.
There’s an online survey tool that doesn’t cost a penny!
Zoomerang lets you create a survey, have students log in to take the survey, and then you can view the results. Each question will have a nice graphic to accompany the results. I use the projector and the computer to show the results. I also print a copy of the results and present it to the class teacher when the students are collected from the media library. Responding to the short survey takes approximately 10 minutes. The results are immediately available.
While I review the results with the students, we compare the results. For the lower classes, we look at the bar charts and notice the similarities and differences, then draw conclusions about what the data reflects. With the older kids, I look closely at the percentages and we discuss what the pie charts would look like based on the numbers.
The multiple choice and yes/no questions that I ask the students are:
1. Choose one:
Male
Female
2. How much do you like school?
I love it so much I can’t wait to get to it tomorrow morning.
I like coming to school.
I only come to school because my parents force me.
I pretend to be sick as much as possible to avoid school.

I like to write !
I like to invent stories, but I don’t like to write them down on paper.
I don’t really like it, but I manage it pretty well.
I only write when my teacher does.
I try to avoid writing at all costs.
Go ahead, try it! I think you will be amazed at how many tech toys your students already have at their disposal!
After designing the survey, the online site will give you a web address so that your students can access the survey. You can bookmark it or make it an active link in a Word document so kids can click on it and easily link to the survey.
After doing this once with the students, you will find many other times when you would like to gather information, but think it would just be too much work to do. Think about attitude assessments and when you need to gather student perceptions and knowledge as baseline data and compare it to final data.
The uses for this free online survey package are endless! If nothing else, try it with your students. Later in the year, have students collect data and see how many would like to try creating their own data collection surveys. Just letting students know what kinds of online applications are available is half the battle in the world of learning with technology.
