California’s Orange County schools released state test results with the announcement that scores had risen for the fifth straight year. This means that 52% of students tested for English in grades 2-11 passed with a grade of proficiency or above. 51% in math. Did you read correctly? 52% and 51% passing means progress to Orange County schools. If you are a parent with children in Orange County public schools, this should be of great concern to you! The scary thing is that the statewide percentages are 43% and 41%. California schools are currently failing our children.

So what should a parent do? Funding is a problem. Teaching the state’s huge immigrant population is a problem. The needs of students with special needs are an issue. And no one really has a good answer. But as a parent, there is something you can do. This is a drastic measure that could impact the entire population of schools in Orange County. But this is not an easy solution. In fact, many Orange County schools families will have a hard time making this move. But it’s so important. Orange County Schools Parents – I challenge you to turn off your television during the school week.

Withdrawal Pains in Orange County Schools

For the small percentage of you still reading, don’t throw the remote at your screen just yet. I know what I’m suggesting is a scary lifestyle change that many schools in Orange County will never consider. But for the academic and future success of your children, listen to me.

Television consumes energy. It doesn’t matter whether your Orange County Schools students are seniors or kindergartners. When they watch TV, they don’t interact with friends and family, exercise, do homework, or use their brains. When children watch television, they: receive inappropriate messages from shows and commercials, become inactive, eat more junk food, and tend to become grumpier and more restless. All of these factors are reflected in poor test scores and behavior in Orange County schools.

How Less TV Can Help Orange County Schools

Now, I know Governor Schwarzenegger isn’t about to pass any initiatives to help me rally Orange County school families to watch less television. In fact, as a parent, you are the only person who can truly make this important change for your family. But why would you want to do that?

Are you busy? Really, really tired? Most parents in Orange County schools feel overwhelmed and exhausted at the end of the day. Television can be a relaxing escape. But think for a moment how busy your family is already with homework, dinner, and activities at the end of the day. What if television was no longer a factor? How would your family spend this time? Would children in Orange County schools go to bed earlier and sleep more if they didn’t get up so late in front of the television? Would you have time to read them more? Going for a walk together? Playing a card game?

If you really want to see improvement in Orange County schools, I challenge you to try this with your family for a month. No television on school days. Aren’t your kids worth it?
