Six Tutoring Tips to Win With Homework

As a parent, helping your student get better grades is a powerful desire, but you don’t always have the time or the tools to make it happen. Do not worry! There are some very basic and easy to implement strategies you can use to get better grades and better work habits.

1. CHOOSE THE SAME TIME TO DO HOMEWORK EVERY DAY

Structure and regularity are extremely important. Just as having meals at specific times of the day is good for you, making homework part of an organized and regular routine is a healthy and necessary step in helping the student reach their potential. Scheduling school work time, like all life skills, needs to be taught and structured by the parent at the beginning.

Ideally, you want to make sure you have the same time booked each day. After a certain number of weeks, say 5, it should become a habit and you should watch it less.

If you’re like many parents and have extracurricular activities scheduled (such as soccer, swimming, karate, music lessons, etc.), you may not be able to have the same time each day. This is not a setback – it just requires a little more planning and attention from the parent, and may take longer for this habit to stick. Your student will be counting on you for this help, so brace yourself!

2. AVOID DISTRACTIONS

It is extremely important that you provide an atmosphere conducive to concentration and completion of work.

It means:

No noise

NO television to be heard

NO Telephone or cellular interruptions

NO siblings running around

This is not something the student can control after sitting down, so it is up to YOU, the parent, to ensure the study environment is peaceful and encourages concentration.

3. PROVIDE THE RIGHT TOOLS

If you’ve made it this far, then you’re doing a great job, but make sure you’re making the physical part of the work environment one that’s also good for working.

The chair and desk/table should be at a good height and comfortable enough to work for a while.

Make sure you have pens, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, rulers – whatever you need to get the job done. You don’t want to give your student the excuse that they don’t have the right tool for the job. A child who does not want to work can be extremely cunning!

4. ENCOURAGE AND CONGRATULATE QUESTIONS AT HOME AND AT SCHOOL

Many students feel embarrassed to admit they have a problem or just don’t understand. This can become a truly crippling problem if not caught early, so be sure to praise the student for being so open about challenges and stumbling blocks.

You won’t always be able to be there for the student, so setting up that kind of fearless attitude to homework challenges is a great way to stimulate questions in school and encourage curiosity as a good thing in life. Your student and school teacher will thank you!

A two-way work diary will be very helpful. Use it to record homework and assignments, but also to jot down questions (at home or at school) on work that are points to check with your tutor or teacher.

5. THERE IS ALWAYS HOMEWORK

A teacher does not have to assign work for there to be homework. Take advantage of this, very early on, to encourage your child to bring their books and school materials home every day. Going through them, reading them aloud, copying certain parts, are all ways to reinforce the learning in progress at school. Ask your tutor or teacher for other great ways to review work on nights when there’s no homework.

The student’s brain is very good at memorization, especially when it is trained by revision. Learning to ride a bicycle, for example, is an almost daily effort. Once you have it, however, it is a skill that is remembered for life.

6. REWARD WITH RECOGNITION!

These days, good school efforts are primarily recognized by parents in two ways. One is to buy some “stuff” for a child – maybe a video game, maybe a cell phone. The other is not recognizing at all. Neither is really ideal for stimulating other good academic work. Try a hug and a kiss, and a real tangible family moment to really express how proud you are of your student’s efforts to increase their success.

This kind of effort on your part as a parent will sow deep seeds of self-respect and self-esteem, while reinforcing the perception that successful academic achievement is important and meaningful. If you feel like you need to give a gift, consider a nice book that you can write words of encouragement and love on that will always be there for your student to reference. Again, you will have made a special effort that will leave an impression on your student. Good homework!
