How Is a Planner Like a Radar?
High school students often resist with the help of a planner or agenda. Think about it from their point of view: they have to stop what they’re doing, get it out of their backpack, find the right page, have a pen or pencil in hand and write things down (hopefully -le, legibly) in a small space. All this, while they don’t even think they need a diary, because they are convinced that they can remember everything!
As a teacher, I try to get children to see their agenda as a radar screen. Missions, appointments, tests, projects, quizzes and sports practices are missiles, rockets and planes that have entered their airspace. Their planner is like a radar screen that allows them to track and manage everything – before disaster strikes! I also teach them that by the time they reach college, their time management responsibilities are far greater than they realize! There are actually three schedules that they must follow in their diaries:
1. The annual calendar
Their school’s annual calendar contains important school-wide dates and events, such as exam weeks, holidays, bell schedule changes, games, gatherings, special celebrations , etc. Students should know where they can find the annual calendar (it is usually found on the school’s website) and periodically review activities and events. Some will impact them (eg Picture Day) and some will not (eg PTA meeting). Record dates and events that concern them in their diaries.
2. Schedule or course schedule
A class schedule or calendar contains assignments, deadlines, and events for a single class, such as science or math. It shows assignments, project due dates, field trips, quizzes, and more. This schedule can be distributed in class as a handout or kept on a teacher’s web page. Information from the class schedule or calendar should be copied into their planner, one to two weeks at a time and updated daily. If there is no homework for a class on a given evening, students should get into the habit of writing “N/H” for “No Homework” on the correct date in the planner. Because a student will have six or more class schedules, there is plenty to keep track of.
3. Personal schedules
By the time a student reaches college, he or she must take on some responsibility for his or her personal schedule. Events and appointments, such as doctor’s, dentist’s and orthodontist’s appointments, club or tutoring meetings, sports practices, games, special occasions, holidays, religious holidays and birthdays constitute a student’s personal schedule. Knowing their personal schedule helps students manage their time. Additionally, one student’s personal schedule often impacts another person’s schedule. Parents need to be notified of practice time changes, or a carpool driver needs to know when a student will be absent from the carpool due to an appointment, etc. Teachers need to know if a student will be absent from class for an appointment.
Copying so much information (annual, class and personal schedules) into an agenda is tedious. But, by keeping track of the three schedules in their diaries, students can get a “big picture” or “radar view” of their responsibilities. This is the key to good time management!
