Let’s see an example of a math trick. Suppose you want to solve 67×11. Can you solve it in less than 5 seconds? You probably can’t. This is because you don’t yet know a small property of multiplication by 11. The mathematical trick to multiply by 11 is as follows:
Imagine the problem as NOT x11. Now follow the steps:
1) The last digit of the answer is the second digit of NOT.
2) The middle digit of the answer is the last digit of the sum of the two digits of NOT.
3) The first digit of the answer is the first digit of NOT plus the carry if there is one.
Now, let’s apply the steps with our previous example of 67×11:
1) Last digit: 7.
2) Middle number: 3. The sum of the digits of 67 is 6 + 7 = 13.
3) Last digit: 6 + 1 = 7. Note that we have a carry because in the previous step we found that the sum of the digits of NOT is greater than 10.
So we conclude that 67 x 11 = 737.
