Uses of Sudoku Puzzles For Kids in the Classroom
At first glance, sudoku puzzles may not seem like an appropriate activity for children, but they actually ARE a fascinating and enjoyable pastime for children of all ages. Although it seems that highly developed math and logic skills are needed to solve puzzles, in reality very little skill is required. Kids just have to be willing to learn the simple strategy, think creatively, and try.
Sudoku puzzles are a great activity to introduce to your students, regardless of age or ability. The uses of these puzzles in the classroom are really only limited by your imagination.
This is a fantastic activity that can be done individually or as a whole class group.
One way to use sudoku with the class as a whole is to project the puzzles onto a whiteboard and allow children to come up with answers one at a time. It could also be done in small groups as a team building exercise.
Another good idea is to organize a sudoku tournament within the class. Choose two children to start and place them in front of the class on either side of a sudoku puzzle, projected onto a whiteboard or drawn on a blackboard. In turn, each child has 30 seconds to find the correct number for an empty space. If a child is unable to produce an answer, they sit down with the rest of the class and another student takes their place. The child who provides the most correct answers in a row for the day is the winner. This can continue for several days or even weeks.
Sudoku puzzles can be used as an incentive to encourage children to work faster. They’re also a great time-filling activity for those awkward times in between during the school day.
When the children return to class after lunch, give them ten minutes to work on puzzles to calm them down after a playful and active break.
Save dreary, boring homework for weeknights and over the weekend, assign a sudoku puzzle to complete instead. Children will continue to learn and develop skills in math and logic, but will find homework to be enjoyable exercise rather than boring.

You can print one or two puzzles at a time or print an entire stack to have them ready to go when needed.
