Habits of Effective Students
When I was in high school and JC (junior college, or Pre-Uni), I got results in some subjects, but not in others. I often wonder why. Looking back later in my college days, I realized that there were certain habits that effective students possess, and by consciously adopting those habits for myself (instead of unconsciously at during my early years), I emerged with stellar first-class honors within the national competition. Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Singapore. And I made this trip with minimal tuition assistance.
So here I am, sharing some tips and habits with all the readers. I hope you can get better results than me!
1. First and foremost, pay attention in class to the important. During my time, I was giving 100% attention to topics I liked, and was generally half awake for topics I didn’t really like. Needless to say, I scored for those I paid attention to with minimal effort. Indeed, teachers usually go through the different types of questions before your exams. They know what will come out and what will not, and thus prepare you for questions during the course. Be sure to review and internalize (not just memorize) the sample questions beforehand.
2. Complete all your homework on your own. Try to do as much as you can on your own before asking for help. This helps to integrate the concepts and methods taught in class and helps you to master them well. I’ve seen people copy their homework instead of doing it themselves. These people usually have to put in a lot more effort at the end of the exams to get better results, which stresses them out.
3. Practice some more questions on the same topic. The old adage “practice makes perfect” is true. With more practice comes more confidence, leading to fewer mental blocks. The speed of question processing will increase and the number of careless errors will decrease. These are extremely important criteria for you to achieve spectacular exam results. You can do this using the ten-year series, previous year’s preliminary papers, assessment books, or even free websites like ExamWorld, which provide free questions and solutions for students.
4. Also learn from other students. You can do this by viewing good works that have been marked. Watch the various teacher comments, learn the different approaches to answering questions and essays, and understand common pitfalls to avoid them in the future. After all, it’s always easier to learn from other people’s mistakes, isn’t it? This was the main method I used to improve my A-level economics essay from a failing to an eventual A. I photocopied my classmates’ A-level essays to analyze, understand their points , their arguments and analyses, etc.
5. Find and learn different ways to check your answers, especially for hard science like math and physics. Reviewing your answers and your assignments again is just one way to check. Most questions have more than one approach (for math) and by using a different approach and getting the same answer, you are more or less guaranteed to be right. Other methods may include working backwards to achieve what the question wanted for you as well. Or maybe, to prove questions, substitute a value to find that both sides of the equation give you the same results. Or even for physics, by remembering certain constants, you can more or less know whether your answer is reasonable or not. An example would be to find the density of oil at 667 kg per cubic meter. Obviously, oil is less dense than water (1000 kg per cubic meter), so the answer was reasonable. This habit is extremely important, and I usually teach my students how to do it and where to look for those “free notes”.
6. Take short notes to read an hour before your exam. Be aware that for subjects such as physics, knowing and understanding the concepts well, memorizing the equations and the definitions of the various terms, may be enough to score Aces for your exams. Knowledge and understanding of the concepts should have been covered in points 1-4 above. The equations and definitions in your short article are just there to help jog your memory so you don’t stumble on exams.
7. Teach other students freely when they ask you for help. If you can explain the question well, it really means that you have fully internalized and understood the concepts tested in the question. I realized during my JC time that questions asked by other students are usually of a higher level than simple questions. By helping them, I trained my mind to be able to solve more difficult questions as well. And by being able to explain to them, I became even more confident and sure of myself in these concepts. Take it as a surprise test/review that happens frequently.
