4 Ways of Defining Belief
By definition, belief refers to a psychological state in which a person sticks to a premise or idea that they believe to be true. Belief is similar to knowledge, but differentiated by a stronger level of trust and perhaps even faith. One of Plato’s earliest works defined knowledge as a person’s “true justified belief”, and this understanding has continued through the ages. You could say that belief is, quite simply, knowledge that has been proven to be true by reason, plausibility, and evidence. Of course, one could argue that belief and knowledge are relative to an individual’s perception. This is a moot point, however, because whatever a person wants to believe will eventually become their reality. It doesn’t matter if it’s true or not.
Psychology, as well as other practices related to human mentality, have long held that belief is the most fundamental form of conscious thought. Whether belief is actually a mental state remains the subject of debate. Nevertheless, in psychology, before a subject can learn new information, the belief system must first be addressed. This helps to learn the “proposal”, or the object of the belief.
In the book Saving Belief, the author speculates that there are four basic ways of looking at belief:
1.The belief is consistent and based on common sense.
2. Common sense belief is not always correct, but can help make informed predictions about the future.
3. The understanding of belief based on common sense is inaccurate and will eventually be replaced by a new system of logic and understanding.
4. Common-sense beliefs can be wrong, but treating each subject and object as having their own beliefs can be effective.
Is belief voluntary?
The next consideration is whether or not the belief is voluntary or involuntary. Some great minds have theorized that belief formation is mostly an involuntary process. Certainly, anyone can investigate information in order to form beliefs. However, this person may well draw automatic conclusions based on their background. This theory is supported by the fact that many people only accept information that supports their already existing belief system. They may even accept narrow, specific “truths,” rather than delve into more difficult studies that result from analyzing a variety of cultures and perspectives.
Imagination can play an important role in shaping a person’s belief system, whether to create other core and dispositional beliefs, alter information, or further perpetuate the belief. Emotion can play an important role in belief. This is observed in the case of individuals, who might deny contradictions when they are unable to refute said arguments by adherence to a belief in which they have become emotionally invested. Sometimes, when there is a lack of evidence to suggest a solid fact, belief can merge with speculation or even faith. This happens when the hypothetical data cannot be reconciled with the outside world.
I was working with a client one day and he was talking about how he needed more referrals to grow his business. We talked about possible referral sources and how many he would need to achieve some of his goals. We did some simple math and found an average number of referrals he would like per referral source to achieve his goals. The number was on average 3 to 5 references per person. Then he said it wouldn’t be possible – the number was too big.
I asked him why he thought it wouldn’t be possible. He said he usually receives two references per interviewee. I asked him how many referrals he expects to receive. He was slow to answer this question, as one might expect. He says slowly, two. He therefore expects to receive two references per interviewee and he actually receives two references. Interesting!
I asked him if he thought he would get more referrals if he expected to get more. He said yes. So he came up with a new number of what he would now expect and began to manifest that reality in his life.

Because each person comes from a different background and has different experiences as well as a unique genetic makeup, one cannot reason that a belief system is factually based unless there is indisputable external evidence that prove that this knowledge is true. Even in this scenario, however, it is difficult to convince people that what they perceive to be external fact should also serve as a solid foundation for a belief system largely based on additional speculation.
What does this mean for the everyday man or woman seeking fulfillment in life? It is important to know that the majority of people often believe what they wish to be true, rather than what external facts suggest. They may wish for a better world, even seeing a world that is becoming increasingly difficult to live in, and subscribe to the belief that something better awaits them. Sometimes belief can be a very powerful thing, as people cling to their core beliefs no matter how directly opposed external factors are.
Once you know more about belief, you can understand why you and others are prone to certain patterns of behavior and learn how to minimize resistance and maximize productivity. This knowledge can be very beneficial in your professional and personal life. Motivation and success start with a basic foundation: belief.
