The Excursion – The Debriefing And Evaluation
Part A
Student debriefing
An excursion is simply a day off from school for the students if there is no follow-up by the teachers. It is therefore important to have a dedicated follow-up to encourage students to take the excursion seriously. So it’s best to have some type of assessment task or report in your follow-up. Here are some ideas of what you could do.
1. Collect all student worksheets after discussing the answers with them.
2. Bring out any special ideas that you hoped the class would have learned from the field trip.
3. Give the assessment tasks according to the field trip.
4. Discuss the field trip in general with the students to get an idea of its success.
5. Some students may have ideas for improving the trip. Look for any ideas they have.
6. It is also important to discuss student behavior and cooperation during these activities. Next, feedback should be given to students on whether they have met the standards of behavior discussed in the student briefing before the excursion.
As a precautionary measure to avoid losing worksheets, teachers could collect all worksheets from all students when they get off the bus. (Check your role numbers against the number of sheets you have as an extra precaution.) Class time can be allotted to complete the worksheets while the teacher begins follow-up work related to the field trip.
Where the worksheet is part of the field trip assessment task and is to be completed at home, ensure that the return date is both bold and highlighted.
Always have plenty of spare copies of the worksheet on hand for students who lose or destroy them.
Part B
Staff debriefing and evaluation
It is also important that you, alone or with your colleagues, carry out a debriefing/evaluation to test its success and the points to improve for the next time.
Your goal should be to create the best possible educational experience for your students. It is important that the work and efforts of teachers have a positive impact on students.
Here is a list of problems to solve. It is by no means exhaustive.

Were the objectives of the excursion achieved?
Should the objectives be modified by adding, reducing or modifying?
Did the location of the site correspond well to the objectives of the excursion?
Other issues

Recommendations for a future excursion
These should be supported by an evaluation of the success of the excursion. The debriefing minutes must be kept and added to the file for the year.
