Gumption, Strength To Deal With "It All"
Annie Rix Militz said that the only way out of a situation is to get through it. Well, looking at most situations, lives, and realities, for the most part, I tend to agree with her. For most, too, hindsight is clearer than foresight in everyday life. So you get an idea why I paraphrased and quoted Ms. Annie Militz on this one. When I think of reality, I would like to go through everything “the easy way”, but, sometimes the easy way is not possible, indeed, sometimes it is possible to avoid the hard way. Here’s the complete catch: sometimes, to really grow, we have to go through something to really learn it, or we get nothing if we avoid the lesson.
For example, I learned algebra, calculus, and advanced statistical math at an early age. What helped me was doing homework for older boys and teaching them hypnotic techniques to pass tests and memorize information quickly. The fact is, however, that they skipped the authentic experience of learning the material on their own like Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants or Lance Armstrong of pro cycling in the Tour de France skipped the legitimate effort to obtain their sports records. Of course, the guys passed the tests, but in the end they didn’t win anything, really. They ignored the efforts needed to really “really do it”, like Barry Bonds with steroids and Lance Armstrong with testosterone doping. Indeed, when you are asked to actually use the knowledge and “really do it”, taking this kind of “ease out”, it will be the most difficult thing of all. This is where the worst payout comes in and, ironically, the best understanding of why it happened comes after the fact.
“After failure, redemption comes with common sense, baby.” my grandmother Edna Van Porter on my mother’s side used to say, and I used to be “stupid enough” to ask “What do you mean, Grandma? ” She used to give me the same answer over and over again patiently, as smart and down to earth and serious as she was. She was not perfect, but intelligent, down to earth and serious about life, having traveled the blocks of life and existence in this world quite a bit with a few marriages and many children, including my dear mother.
So, I’ll tell you my answer to that question and then end this article: As long as you can reinvent yourself, there’s no failing. Quitting genuinely and taking the easy way out or cheating is failing, but honestly putting in the guts, sweat, perseverance and effort is redeeming common sense and nothing else. The weakest give up. The strongest people simply change their approach and persist. What do you think happened to beauty queen Vanessa Williams? Everyone remembers her more than the beauty queens who won the years before 1984 and the winners after 1984 because she had the courage to persist. Of course, I could go on with even better examples, but I wanted to use a common example to show that what I’m saying is real, serious, and really honest, real, and deeply meaningful to everyone. So I end again with a quote from Calvin Coolidge, former President of the United States of America:
“Nothing in the world can replace perseverance. Talent won’t; nothing is more common than talented men who fail. Genius won’t; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. And determination alone is all-powerful.”
