The Hydrogen Hybrid Truth
I had been looking for a better way to save money on gas for some time. I went from a car I like to a car I don’t like just to save money. I changed my driving habits to drive in my car’s sweet spot (about 57 mph). I even started planning my trips to use as little gas as possible, but with my business, family and friends, I still spend hundreds of dollars at the pumps every month.
Well, I was paying $100 at the pump, that is.
You see earlier this year I heard of something called a hydrogen conversion kit, or you might have heard of it as a hydrogen hybrid, or something like modifying your car to burn Brown’s gas, HHO or oxyhydrogen. Sometimes people talk wrongly about running your car on water.
The idea originated and was patented by Yull Brown in 1977 where he created a system where you run electricity through water and break down the H2O molecule into a gaseous form of H2 and O (hence HHO) . Ironically when combined they are the thing you use to put out fires, hydrogen and oxygen are very flammable on their own. Like many new discoveries and technologies, there are many myths, misleading claims and outright lies surrounding the whole concept of adding HHO to your car to improve mileage. When I started looking at this, I spotted a lot of them right away. The one that always irritates me the most is the mass of articles and advertisements claiming that you can run your car on water. While this is technically possible, it’s actually less efficient than having a purely electric car, and it’s not so good for your car or the environment.
However, it is not efficient due to the good old laws of thermodynamics.
You see, every time you transfer energy from one system to another there is a loss. When you put a pot on the stove, a lot of the energy is lost to the air because the stove also heats it, and even the stove. When a car is moving, much of the energy produced by gasoline simply exits the tailpipe as hot exhaust and is never transferred into the action of turning the wheels. What does this mean in regards to running your car on HHO? Well, if you read the Wikipedia article mentioned above, it will link to another article on the efficiency of electrolysis and for those who want it, it will explain the chemical reasons why the amount of energy used to separate the hydrogen and oxygen atoms in H2O is greater than the amount of energy your car will get from burning the hydrogen that is released.
It’s a simple fact. It is indisputable and indisputable.
So the obvious question I had when I found out about this was how are all these people claiming they are getting incredible mileage out of their cars. Is this all a joke or is there some truth behind it all. The real crux is that the electricity used to split water into HHO also comes from your car. Specifically the alternator, which is powered by your engine, which is powered by your gas. Much like a phone game you played as a kid, or the tape you copied from a rather bad-sounding copy, we can all imagine something getting lost in a process like that.
So I did more research.
One of the things I know is that the rough calculations of the chemical equations assume that only two things are present: water and electricity. The light bulb comes to mind when considering things like this. The brightness we all expect from a 100 watt light bulb previously required much more than 100 watts to create. The first bulbs consumed much more energy than those of our parents. Eventually the incandescent bulb was nearly perfected and a 100 watt bulb became the standard for our living rooms and general lighting. But we all know you can now get those nifty fluorescent curly bulbs that can produce the same brightness as the good old 100 watt bulb using just 7 watts. How do they do that? They harness the power of other elements (in this case, a gas that glows when current passes through it) to improve efficiency.
So I started researching what people seem to be doing to improve the efficiency of their cars by running what appears to be an inefficient system. It turns out there are a lot of other things that come into play. One of them is the metals that are used in the system, also come into play are chemicals that are added to the water to allow the electricity flow through it better and waste less energy by simply heating the water. Other things experienced are the frequency of the electricity and the pulsation of the electricity, all of which seem to affect the amount of energy needed to create HHO gas from water.
Even still, based on a perfect system, the calculations said it was only 80-90% efficient, so even still the system shouldn’t really work.
So what gives?
Sure! The obvious thing I had forgotten. You mix HHO with gasoline vapor. So what happens when this happens? I’ve been working with cars for a while and know a bit about air-fuel ratios and mixture types and temperatures, and how adding things like octane improves performance, so it didn’t take too much time to realize that one of the biggest problems with gasoline is the rate at which it burns.
You see in the grand scheme of things, gas burns well, but it doesn’t burn very well. If the gas molecules are too far apart they will not ignite and may not ignite fast enough to get the most out of the engine. This is where the HHO mixture really comes into play. You see, not only are you adding hydrogen, but you are adding oxygen, which is as important to the combustion of the gas as the gas itself. Also, hydrogen burns faster and can ignite when the molecules are further apart. This means your engine becomes more efficient and power to the wheels is increased. When this happens, the engine doesn’t need to work as hard and you don’t need to use as much gas.
I’ve since found numerous road tests, demo videos and even a guy who has an 80+ video series of how he got the most out of his HHO system and other people who drove eco-friendly drives and got over 100 mpg out of their cars.
The most amazing part of it all was that you can build a kit yourself to add this capability to your car. There are also prefabricated systems that can be installed by professionals, but they cost between $800 and $1,000. You can build a kit yourself from parts available at your local hardware store. There are a number of guides that give you the information you need to make one of these kits and install it yourself in an afternoon. As I mentioned earlier, it’s not enough to just run electricity through water, and the available guides tell you how to do it properly. Of course you can do it without a guide, in fact if you’re hunting you can find basic information on how to operate it for free, but if you don’t want to make a mistake and get water in your engine (this will cause issues), you’ll want to get a good guide (some are hundreds of pages with details for different cars) and get it right.
Don’t just take my word for it. Do your research, read the Wikipedia articles mentioned above, and find out how the process works. Go to YouTube and watch actual videos of the technology being used and see if it’s the right thing to do to save you money.
