Children Who Are Given an Advantage

As the mother of Donovan, 2-7, and Darren, 22, I knew early in their lives that I would not leave their upbringing entirely to schools and teachers. I decided that I would give these children an edge in life, in their education. I’m just an ordinary, ordinary, ordinary mother who struggles like everyone else. I only have a high school diploma and 2 years of college, but I have high hopes and dreams for my 2 boys. That’s what I did to give them the “advantage”!

I started reading to my sons when they were just coming out of the womb. I believe reading to them often, singing to them and talking to them (not in baby talk), really gives them the edge they will need in life. Experts say that a child’s mind develops and learns quickly and acquires most of the knowledge between the ages of 0 and 3… I believe them! I knew somewhere in the back of those tiny little heads that information was stored for later use.

Now at first my mom thought I was crazy when she learned that my 18 month old son not only knew his ABCs but could count to 20. A little after he passed 3 1/2 he was counting good. exceeded 100. He had learned that all planets, most presidents, all states (their location on an empty map) and most of their capitals, could spell out months and days of the week and much more! By the time they started kindergarten, they could recognize and spell small 3 and 4 letter words. I read to them every day.

The first thing I did was buy a mat (from Wal-Mart) with the ABC on it and the ABC would match all animal names starting with those letters. I also bought flash cards (same place) that have everyday words in them. Once they started recognizing and spelling these everyday words, they started reading like little pros!

It really wasn’t hard work at all! It pays HUGE dividends. My two sons were THE best in their class – not just “one of the best” in their class! And you know what…they love it! The 22-year-old could write his name in cursive right after turning 4 years old. They are both excellent in math, in English and especially in reading. My eldest son, even today, reads all kinds of books. Wherever he goes, if there is a magazine or literature, he will take it to read. It makes your kids well balanced. My 7 year old son is also an avid reader. He was tested at school and in grade one his reading was 3.8, meaning he is reading at grade three level, 8 months into school. He is now in Grade 2 and his reading average is 4.6, which means he is reading at Grade 4 level, 6 months into school. His overall reading grade for the year is 104.6%. His overall mark in spelling is 110% and in mathematics 99%. Excellent spelling! He wins 100s 99% of the time!

The fact is, your child can do it too! Don’t waste your money on expensive things, just go to Wal-Mart, K-Mart or retailers like these and buy the flash cards for spelling, counting, multiplication, etc. The 7-year-old child knew all the multiplications. (1 – 12) since school started last year, so just before he started 2nd grade! It’s not that he’s a genius, it’s just that I started small and kept teaching until I had nothing left to teach him for his age. I even started teaching him geometry – grade 6 level and he can actually solve most of the problems I give him. He understood the concept! Amazing that when you teach and teach them, the concepts in these courses become so easy for them to grasp!

Most importantly, read to your child every day WITHOUT FAILURE! And, when they start reading on their own, have them read for at least 45 minutes a day.

I bought the Scholastic dictionary, encyclopedia and many chapter books for him to read. He must also read on weekends. He’s learned so many “fun facts” and he knows quite a bit about just about any topic you ask, whether it’s animals, people, places, or things. It surprises me most of the time. My eldest son is the same.

I remember when he started kindergarten in Nashville, TN, the teacher asked me to come over so she could talk to me. I couldn’t imagine what she wanted because I knew he couldn’t misbehave – he knows I can’t stand it!

Well, she said, “I just have one thing to say…I’m stunned”! She said she asked the children to take the magazines she had on the shelf, cut out pictures and make a collage. She wanted them to write a story based solely on the images they saw. Well, my son bought a “People” magazine and brought it to her and started reading it – little words, big words and all! She was so stunned that she had to call me to tell me.

My 7 year old son had a teacher who had the same reaction! He had started private school here in Memphis, TN when he was in what they call “Pre-K” (kindergarten). She said to me one day, ‘Ms. Ballard, Donovan can read’. I said ‘uh-huh’. She said, ‘No, Mrs. Ballard, I mean he REALLY can read’! I said, ‘yeah, I know… I taught him’. I then told him how he knew the names of planets, presidents, states, capitals, months, days of the year, the oath of allegiance, etc. She said “Well give yourself a pat on the back…it’s just awesome, fantastic”!

As I mentioned before, it really isn’t difficult. Other tips that I recommend are to point, a lot, at the objects when the children have started “chatting”. They will pick up a lot of words this way. Their vocabulary will soar! My son and I would drive by signs on the way to school and work and say and spell words on regular road signs or think of synonyms for words or homophones.

One way to encourage your child to consider reading as a pleasure is to offer him a personalized book. These books have the child’s name written in the script. This child will not be able to put the book down. If they can’t read, I bet they WILL TRY to read it and once they learn to read this book, they won’t put it down! I just wish I had known about these personalized children’s books when my sons were little and couldn’t read or were just starting to read! I would have a whole library!

I love teaching my kids new things and it’s a joy to see them really “get it”! I would like to help you help your child read. It gives me a lot of satisfaction. Please email me at beverly_ballard@hotmail.com and I can tell you how to order these books. There are many, many titles to choose from and I’m sure there’s a title to suit your needs.

Keep up the work, work and foundations you may have already established and remember, the key is to READ, READ,

READ!!!!
