## Math Success With Your Math Tutor

Maybe schools are too busy social engineering to teach math. We’ve found that too many students really struggle with math, and it doesn’t have to be.

I remember when I was a kid and I found two major problems in math class. First, I didn’t like the teacher. Two, I had no idea what he was talking about.

Let’s deal with the second problem first. Having no idea was mainly due to a shaky foundation in basic arithmetic and math. Since the base was weak, there was no way I could assimilate and advance to higher levels. We find that many students are in this situation.

Hating the teacher was just a diversion and a reflection since I hated being “out of it” and looking stupid. It’s easier to blame the teacher than yourself, isn’t it? Of course, just hating the teacher made learning all the more difficult as I tended not to listen and the problems only exacerbated.

I was very lucky when my best friend’s dad gave me much needed advice. It sounded crazy at the time, but it worked for me. I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone, nor would it be convenient for most. What he told me to do was go and teach math in the evenings at a technical college. It was right after I got kicked out of college. I failed the math, you see!

To teach mathematics I had to be able to explain it and to do that I had to study with renewed vigor and total concentration. Believe it or not, my math skyrocketed and after I returned to college, I graduated with honors and top of my class! It was a victory after years of suffering.

You can imagine that I am not advocating this path for you, but simply showing you that we truly understand the underlying issues and empathize with struggling students.

An experienced tutor should be dedicated to helping overcome these issues by ensuring that all students have a solid foundation and then helping them move up the math ladder. This has proven time and time again to be the fastest way to great results. Shortcuts don’t work because they avoid the basic principle that every building should have a strong foundation and the taller the building, the stronger the foundation should be.

Math calculators are a good example of a major problem. It’s easy to follow the instructions and press a few buttons to get an answer. But how many students actually know what the calculator has done? How many know how numbers behave and the real story behind buzzing chips?

We have found that going through these problems and solving them with pencil and paper can do wonders for a student’s understanding of basic mathematical principles. It may sound scary, but it works.
