How to Continuously and Better Evaluate Students’
Many high school teachers wonder why students aren’t better prepared academically when they enter high school. Similarly, college teachers wonder why their students are not better prepared when they enter college. To solve this problem, why don’t schools set up and use an IDP for each student for each school year? An IDP is an individual development plan that can be used for each student to help them plan for academic success each school year beginning in kindergarten.
IDP has been used for teachers for several years as part of their assessment process, but why not use it for students as well, so we can track their progress as well? For example, if a student IDP can be developed to identify students’ strengths, weaknesses, social issues, and other concerns, teachers will already know their students and their academic progress clearly at the start of each school year. The same form can also be used for Academic Recommendations to help students progress further and more successfully. Starting an IDP student at the kindergarten level would give teachers, schools, and parents an ongoing record of each student’s academic strengths and weaknesses and, more importantly, what needs to happen for each student to have more academic success.
Too often in our school system, we have students who arrive in high school unprepared, and no one has taken the time to work on and correct their early years shortcomings. It is both a personal and academic tragedy. I have observed students who only read at the 3rd to 5th grade level in the ninth grade, and when I researched these students, I discovered that they already had reading problems in the early years, but no one gave them the extra support they needed then. This is truly a tragedy, and a student IDP will make more people aware of individual student problems and find a way to solve them.
The IDP is a convenient and unique way to educate parents and educators and make them more accountable for the continued academic successes of all children in our schools. Of course, one of the main concerns is who is going to keep those records and who is going to fill out the forms.” The teacher is the logical person to fill out the form, but I believe that with all the technology available today , any additional work can be minimized, and the IDP can be transmitted electronically.The form can even be developed as a check-off, if necessary.On the flip sign are the benefits that will be offered to teachers when they know the strengths and weaknesses of their students at the beginning of each school year and can thus better plan their lessons for this school year.
If we really want to educate all of our students and educate them well, we have to stop leaving so many students behind. One way to solve this problem is to continuously assess our students in the early years and provide the necessary support then and in the future to any students who need extra help, as they will benefit immensely.
