In Ghana, a strong movement towards improving their mathematics curriculum has recently been launched. This government project aims to make mathematics a priority in schools.
The President of the Ghana Mathematics Society, Prof. Sitsofe Anku said they should enable learners or students to enjoy learning mathematics and help them realize that they play an important role in society.
He also said that arithmetic is an essential aspect of life and that it is a good idea to build their school math curriculum around it for the future of students. In fact, some children do not graduate or enter higher education because they have insufficient math scores.
It has also been observed that some men who wanted to try out for the Ghana Armed Forces, National Security Services and Nursing Training School or other professions did not pass the math proficiency test.
Basics and importance of mental calculation
The professor, because of these statistics, even appealed to the media to help them in this project by showing programs that teach mathematics.
Mrs. Dorothy Gordon, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghanaian-Indian Kofi Annan Center of Excellence for ICT, also called on Ghanaian educators to think about other methods of teaching mathematics.
If you ask a mental arithmetic teacher or check out a children’s mental arithmetic book, you’ll instantly see that it’s presented in a very playful yet informative way.
This is the main difference of arithmetic with other methods of learning or teaching mathematics. Professor Sitsofe Anku also said their project aims to teach teachers to eliminate the notion that maths is difficult.
Professor Anku also said that, based on their studies, a significant fraction of street children in Ghana are due to academic failure, especially in mathematics.
