PIM Team Case Study – Creating Text Effects With PHP And GD

Find out how you can create graphical effects on text with PHP and GD – drop shadows, arcs, fonts and colors.

Problem

A-tec Signs and Sraphics Inc. launched a website with the idea of selling decals online. To get better interested customers, the website needed to integrate an online decal builder. The company also offers decals for vehicles that have made specific manufacturer requirements, such as having the decal text revolving around 4 types of arcs.

Goals

  • Provide users with a preview area
  • Allow visitors to choose font and color
  • Allow adding drop shadow and selecting drop shadow color
  • Allow transforming text into arcs
  • Real-time calculation

Solution

Due to the need to increase customer interest, we had to think not of perfect mathematical formulas when displaying the charts in the preview area, but of the people who will be looking at them.

As we’ll reveal below, there were few issues around human appreciations for something “perfectly smooth” and matchematical perfect numbers.

Methodology

We were going to use the PHP GD library extensively for text effects. It made it easy to change fonts and colors, add drop shadows and rotate texts.

We also had to create color palettes that appear when the user clicks and disappear when the color is selected (you can personally try creating decals here). Using hidden layers and javascript was supposed to do the job.

The main problem of this site was to create 4 types of arcs so that when the user selects one, the text is created around an imaginary arc (like in vector graphics software). We were going to study Bézie’s formulas and create these arcs with its help.

Implementation

PIM Team Bulgaria was given the task of creating the fully functional online decal maker with the following features:

– Decal background

Some users were supposed to have their decals placed on a colored background. We needed to allow the preview area to be painted into a selected background. We first created the image in the temp folder:

</p> <p> // the name of the destination image $dest=&#8217;decals/&#8217;.time().&#8217;.jpg&#8217;; //the background image filled in a rectangle ( $im, 0, 0, 590, 60, $colors[$_POST[&#8216;bcolors&#8217;]]);</p> <p>

The $colors array contains the available colors which are stored by the administrator in the database.

Thus, when the visitor selects a background, it is passed as a parameter to the imagefilledrectangle function.

– Font selection

Users should be able to select fonts for their future decals. Knowing that we cannot assume that all fonts will be available on all visitors’ computers, we had to upload them to the web server directory.

We allowed admin to manage fonts, add their names and upload files in admin area.

The fonts in the selection box come from the database. The selected font was passed in the call to the imagettftext function which draws over the previously created image.

– Color selections

The color selections were to be palettes that appear when the user clicks and disappear when the color is selected. The palette should look like an array with colors and those colors are also defined in the

admin area so they had to come dynamically. We had to seed a static javascript function with dynamic content.

We created a PHP cycle that took the colors from the database and then created a string for the HTML table. This table is then passed to a javascript function that creates the palettes using hidden layers:

</p> <p> function showTable(table) mouseX = window.event.x + document.body.scrollLeft+25; if(table==&#8217;background&#8217;) var content=&#8221;&#8221;; var y=460; if(table==&#8217;fonts&#8217;) var content=&#8221;&#8221;; var y=690; if(table==&#8217;shadows&#8217;) var content=&#8221;&#8221;; var y=810; document.getElementById(&#8216;tabler&#8217;).style.pixelLeft=mouseX; document.getElementById(&#8216;tabler&#8217;).style.pixelTop=y; document.getElementById(&#8216;tabler&#8217;).style.visibility=&#8217;visible&#8217;; document.getElementById(&#8216;tabler&#8217;).innerHTML=content; </p> <p>

Of course, once the user had selected the desired color, we had to hide the palette:

</p> <p> function setColor(elid,color,fromid,shc) document.getElementById(elid).value=color; document.getElementById(&#8216;tabler&#8217;).style.visibility=&#8217;hidden&#8217;; </p> <p>

So we created pretty palettes that appear and disappear with a single click and don’t take up much space on the screen.

– Drop Shawdows

The decals offered have the option to add a drop shadow, so we had to add this option to the online builder. PHP didn’t offer a nice function for that though. We have created a procedure that draws the texts twice – once the original 100% saturated text and once the shadow with a color percentage and appropriate displacement. Of course, the shadow was drawn on the image before the main text.

</p> <p> @imagettftext($img, 20, $gr[$i]$x+$dx, $ys[$i]+$dy, $scolors[$shadowcolor]&#8221;fonts/&#8221;.$_POST[&#8216;fonts&#8217;],$word[$i]); </p> <p>

– Bows

The main problem came when we had to “rotate” the texts through arcs. First we created the perfect Bezie function to draw the curves and fit the letter above them. But what a surprise – the curves looked perfect on their own, but when we adjusted the letters above them they looked rough.

After investigating this issue, we realized that the rough resolution of the screen and the inability to antialise the images did not allow us to create nice arcs. We were faced with an insoluble problem.

We decided to create some arcs with graphics software (CorelDraw) and see what’s wrong.

We noticed that Corel’s curves looked great after being manually adjusted. However, you can’t just quit the program to automatically create perfect curves. A human eye was needed to judge whether a curve looks correct or not.

We took a totally different direction. There was no universal function to help us. The solution we found was to “manually” adjust each letter. We created a procedure with cases that adjusted each letter to the appropriate place and with an appropriate rotation according to the length of the text. It worked!

We have created 2 tables for each type of arc – a table with positions and a table with rotations.

The rest was simple:

</p> <p> if($arctype) $start=(35-$l)/2; if($start%2) $start+=1; $gr=array_slice($gr,$start,$l); $ys=array_slice($ys,$start,$l); if(!$arctype) { $ys=array(); $gr=array(); //make the arrays for($i=0;$i</p> <p>

You can go to the atec website and try the bows we made (http://atecsigns.com/decal/step_1.php).

Results

Now A-tec Sings website maker creates perfect decals with graphics, calculates the price and allows you to add the decals to your cart and chgeckout (shopping cart software is also created by PIM Team Bulgaria).

The builder allows the visitor to create the desired decals with any color, drop shadow, background and shape, preview them and calculate the cost for different sizes and quantities.

The website and builder were promoted by a huge radio advertising company. At the time it was the only builder of decals which allowed to create texts around arcs.

conclusion

  • Use GD to create text effects
  • Don’t forget that you can create your own functions for what GD does not offer
  • Don’t always look for perfect mathematical formulas. Graphic effects are intended for the human eye
  • Upload fonts to server
  • Use javascript and hidden layers to achieve great flexibility
