Speed Reading Tips For Creating A Photographic Memory – Remembering Numbers
If you’re like most people who email me, you probably have trouble remembering numbers. Numbers and statistics can be very frustrating to learn.
For example, in business you often have to learn SKU numbers for various products. Numbers that don’t really make sense. Percentages, dates, phone numbers all combine to create a digital nightmare at work.
At school, the problem is just as difficult. The learning constants in science and math often frustrate many students. In fact, math statistics are far worse than reading statistics. Figures show that 28% of high school students cannot read. Now remember that 40% of students drop out and seniors are the best of the bunch. This makes this stat even worse. But when you look at the stats for the math, it’s even worse. Imagine that 38% of high school students can’t count. I am not talking about calculus or geometry. I’m talking about fractions, decimals and percentages. While studying calculus in Europe in grade 7, our students in grade 12 can do simple calculations. No wonder we are losing more and more jobs to countries whose students learn to read, write and count. Let’s start by solving the math problem in this article by learning a simple technique for remembering numbers.
The number 3.14 is very important. Many of you may recognize this as the value of Pi. Pi is a constant used in geometry to measure the area or circumference of a circle. This number is difficult to learn using rote memory techniques. Instead, imagine the date of March 14. You can write the date March 14 as 3/14. What do you think is easier to remember from March 3.14 or March 14? Figures often lack content. Your brain sees no reason to retain the information. Dates, on the other hand, provide context. If you turn a constant into a date, you’ll find it much easier to learn.
As an exercise, try converting the constants you need to learn at work and school into dates. It will be much easier for you to remember using this very easy to learn technique. Enjoy.
