One Main Number and Multiple Incoming Lines
“We would like to have a main phone number and several phone lines for calls.” Can a request like this to your phone company be any simpler than that?
You’d be surprised how many different ways a phone company can configure your lines. And each solution has its own set of pros and cons.
Top lines, hunt groups, roll lines, driver number, real number are the common terms here to know.
Overlines – There is a main number or pilot number which is the first line, then there are overlines or additional lines. Each line is physically connected to your phone system to provide you with multiple lines to dial.
For example, if you need three lines coming into your office, the request will be for a main number or a pilot line and 2 extra lines or you can call it a one plus two extra lines system.
If you need 4 incoming lines, then the request will be for 1 main or pilot line and 3 superlines, ie a system plus three superlines.
Each of the secondary lines is a separate phone line, with the same phone number attached to them, i.e. your main or pilot phone number for your company.
The over-line system ensures that when your first line is busy, the next incoming call will ring on the next over-line line, until all your lines are busy.
AND, most importantly, it will ensure that each of them displays your PRIMARY phone number as the caller ID when you call.
This is not the case with hunt groups or the multiline system.
