Wicca Symbols Explained
Wicca symbols and other pagan designs have accompanied mankind for thousands of years. Today they are still used by witches to focus energy during rituals or to focus on a specific element or deity. Rooted in the dynamics of our planet and solar system, Wiccan symbols and beliefs are a rich legacy from our ancestors. There are many wicca symbols, here are the basic symbols.
The most powerful of the wicca symbols is of course the pentacle. Made up of a combination of the Wicca symbols of the five elements – earth, water, fire, air and spirit – the resulting pentacle is enclosed within a unifying circle. Of all the wicca symbols, the pentacle offers the most powerful protection when worn on the person, the power of which can be further enhanced by the choice of metal used for the pentacle. If the pentacle is silver you will invoke the added protection of the moon goddess and if it is gold the sun god.
Other wicca symbols include the spirit circle which has two crossed four-pointed arrows in a circle which also represents the five elements.
The Triple Moon and Horned God Wicca symbols are often used to represent and therefore connect with female and male deities respectively. Sometimes known as a goddess, the representation of the triple moon is that of a full moon between two crescent moons. Representing birth, life and death, the lunar month of course also reflects the length of the human menstrual cycle. The horned god, sometimes referred to by his Celtic name of Cernunnos, is represented by a circle surmounted by a pair of horns in the shape of an inverted crescent. Used to represent nature or a male deity, when used in conjunction with the triple moon, these wicca symbols are a strong representation of the complementary power of opposites.
One of the most familiar Wicca symbols is the interlocking ovals of infinity still used today in science and math. Often seen on Thor’s hammer pendants worn in the Viking Age and on ancient carvings, this again represents the past, present and future, the endless circle of life.
The septagram or seven-pointed star is the last of the basic symbols of wicca. Depicting the seven days of the week and the then known astrological bodies – Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. each point of the star can be used during the ritual to focus the energies of that planet in the same way that the points of a pentacle can be used to focus the energies of the elements of the earth.
