On Fasting, Training and Spiritual Equity

Decades ago, someone came up with the concept of IQ or intelligence quotient, which was supposed to be a measure of your intelligence. What it really measures is your analytical or cognitive brain, and people have started to realize that being really good at math and spinning shapes around in your head isn’t a good measure of how how you function as a person. Then came EQ, or Emotional Quotient, which relates to our consciousness and how you deal with the softer side of things, your own emotions, feelings, and relationships with others. It’s a matter of empathy.

Today there is a third quotient, SQ or spiritual quotient, which is a measure of your “spiritual intelligence”. Originally it was discredited as pseudoscience, as it suffers from the unfortunate evil of using the word “spiritual”, which automatically induces religious connotations. And this connotation was not too far off because at one time, what is encompassed by spiritual intelligence fell within the realm of religion.

Spiritual intelligence is about meaning.

Even today in the business world, there is a lot of talk about spiritual intelligence and the fulfillment of employees, that is to say, does your work give you meaning and fulfillment? What is it to give someone fulfillment? Part of this includes concepts such as self-esteem, self worth, compassion, direction, happiness. Howard Gardner, a psychologist, coined the term “existential intelligence” in an attempt to move away from religious ties and the automatic responses that come with it.

In this sense, human beings are extremely “spiritual” creatures. Religions are really traditional manifestations of the need for compassion, self-esteem, meaning and ultimately happiness. We are programmed to find meaning in everything. Unfortunately, science has not had the maturity to consider these “softer” concepts, even today it struggles.

Anyway, why are we talking about IQ, EQ, SQ? I implore you to explore these concepts holistically in all areas of your life, but specifically I want to talk about fitness and health. When embarking on a holistic program for mind, body, and soul, you need to remember your IQs, EQs, and SQs.

You need to know what you are doing and how to do it well. I don’t mean you need to know the detailed science behind fasting or Tibetan rituals and stimulation of the endocrine glands, but you should at least know how to fast properly and manage your workout routines. Otherwise, you’ll be one of those morons who tries to force too much weight and take protein shakes without knowing what it’s doing to your system.

You need to be aware of your emotional state and the impact of what you do or eat. You need to deal with your emotional health and the impact on your relationships with others. If you overtrain and make yourself grumpy all the time, it won’t work. If you walk around flexing and thinking you’re better than everyone else because you think you can lift more (when in reality you look like a jerk). Or if your girlfriend dumps you because her workout progress is hurting your ego and you keep putting her down (true story). If your empathy and your emotional states are suffering, you are missing the point. Health of mind, body, and soul is about becoming a better person, not promoting an elitist, selfish mentality.

Finally, you need to know why you are doing what you are doing. What do you do that gives you meaning and fulfillment, and fundamentally, what gives you happiness. You need to understand how your mind and spirit work and work for it, not against it.

We tend to over-ritualize things, we see this often in religion where ritual becomes such a priority that we forget why we go to church or pray 5 times a day. Incidentally, it turned out to be the other day while I was doing one of my daily Tibetan rites… which involves stimulating the chakras, i.e. your endocrine system… about how some of the daily prayer movements of a certain religion can be based on the same principles, if you consider the movements and the meditative nature of the prayer verses.

Either way, the same over-ritualization can happen in your health regimen, whether it’s gym work, cardio, fasting, nutrition, etc. Remember why you’re doing all this and experimenting is so much more than worrying about the calories in your next meal or how perfect your deadlift was or how clockwork your fast is, to the point where your ego is inflated by the rituals you do instead of the mind, body and soul you are working towards. Life, love, relationships and basically happiness are more important than an elitist mentality.

Don’t do things just for the sake of doing it because someone in the gym is doing it and it works for them. It may not work for you. There are A MILLION ways to be healthy and holistic…you have to find that balance between informed action (doing things that work and knowing how to do them right) and what works in your lifestyle, your motivations and relationships you want stay with those you love.

I’d like to think I’m in tune (maybe a little too in tune) with wanting meaning and happiness because frankly if I don’t see the point in something and I don’t like it, I’m not going to do it. I’m not one of those who keep doing something I don’t like because “it’s good for you”. If you don’t like it, then no, it’s not good for you, it’s not a smart EQ and SQ. There’s bound to be something that’s right for you that you’ll like, just keep trying things until you find it. And when you find it, keep evolving and improving it. You might be surprised what actually speaks to you when you find the right angle. My aunt said to me, choose something you love and do it all your life. Well, I don’t know for “your whole life”, forever is a long time, but the main thing is true, pick something you like and it works or you just won’t be happy.

I love my tai chi class because our sifu is about how certain moves stop someone from grabbing you (rather than something vague about sucking energy from the universe), a point he regularly demonstrates, which usually gets me in an arm lock by a 70-year-old man. I love experimenting with Tibetan rites, yoga and fasting because I understand what the chakras are now and how what yoga is trying to do is aligned with what fasting is aiming for, and why they all need to be done together and holistically. It’s okey for me. Maybe the frou-frou stuff works for you.

Today I spoke to a girl who is in the early stages of trying intermittent fasting with the basic 16/8 model and she told me how in her rush to lose fat she broke the fast with cornflakes. I looked her straight in the eye and in my voice closest to Clarke Gable’s, I said “honestly honey, you’re doing everything wrong”. There is a difference between “fasting” and “starvation” and while fasting is good for you, starvation is harmful. If you fast for 16 hours, or even up to 20 or 24 hours, when you eat, imagine eating a day of at least your maintenance caloric load in a short period of time. Which means the line between “healthy portions” and “consumption” isn’t the same as we’ve been taught to think. That is to say that you can eat more during your meals, without gorging yourself and without excess of course, in fact you have to eat more because calories, despite our received ideas, are not your enemies but are necessary in the right quantity. to live healthy, for your body, your mind and your soul.

I told him you didn’t understand, get back to basics. You’re not starving your body, you’re not fad dieting. You are aligning your lifestyle habits with the way our bodies have evolved to function. Imagine again our plains ancestor, leading a hard and busy life and hunting his meal and eating heavily when he comes, followed by periods of effective fasting.

And this is the crux of the problem. It misses the point. So don’t miss the point :p

Yes, it takes work and effort. Yes, you have to read things and try things. But shit, that’s you you’re talking about. I know people who put more effort into maintaining their car than themselves. I mean really? Do I really have to insist on this point? Of course, it will take work and effort. Take the time and effort then. If you don’t invest it in yourself, who else will? There are no real shortcuts in life.

And then at the end, remember that real wisdom is realizing that you really don’t know anything. So we have to keep learning. There is no end”.

Anyway, some thoughts on fasting. Today I made my weekly 24 hour fast much easier than last week. Much of fasting is psychological, which is why the best 24-hour fast begins the night before rather than in the morning. Last week, I had my last meal at midnight, simply because my schedule was working, and pushing my fast until the next midnight was a pain, especially at 10 p.m. I started my fast at 8 p.m. yesterday and continued until 8 p.m. today, cake. I even found time to do weight training and had a great massage afterwards.

I found something that confused me a bit. One strategy for training on an empty stomach is to supplement with BCAAs (I think I’ve written about this before), before and also after training if you plan on not breaking your fast right after. The reason for this is to avoid catabolism due to the effects of heavy weight training in a glycogen-depleted state after prolonged fasting (i.e. to prevent your body from cannibalizing muscle). But then, BCAA supplements contain about 30 calories per serving, which goes against zero or minimal calories during fasting. I read somewhere that 50 calories is the cap to stay in an effective fasting state, but I need to know more
