Medicare Supplement Plan F – Everybody’s Doing It, But Should You?

Medicare Supplement Plan F is the most popular Medicare supplement plan in most parts of the country. Most insurance companies that offer supplemental plans and agents emphasize Plan F. However, is it still the best option for you? We have listed some guidelines below to help you make this decision:

1. How does Premium compare to lower tier plans, such as “D” and “G”? Plan F is generally the most expensive of the Medicare supplement plans (with the exception of Plan J). With the lower tier plans, you can sometimes save up to $20-30/month, which might not seem like much on a monthly basis, but can be very significant savings over the course of a year.
2. Can you afford a few small out-of-pocket expenses (like the $135/year Medicare Part B deductible) in exchange for lower premiums? These lower tier plans, like D and G in particular, do not cover the Medicare Part B deductible of $135/year (for 2009). This means that the first $135 you are charged per year for Medicare Part B costs (physician fees and services) will be your responsibility. A simple math should help you decide if your premium savings on the lower plans would offset that $135/year fee. Obviously, if you save $20/month on your premiums, you’ll be financially better off over the course of a year by taking one of the lower tier plans.
3. Do the doctors/hospitals in your area accept Medicare’s “mission”? Plan F is one of only three standardized Medigap plans that provides full coverage for Part B excess charges. Part B excess charges occur when a physician does NOT accept Medicare’s “assignment” ( or the amount Medicare pays for certain services and procedures). In most areas, however, physicians and physicians accept an assignment and are paid strictly according to Medicare’s fee schedule for procedures and services. If the doctors or physicians in your area, or more specifically those you would use, ACCEPT the assignment, that benefit shouldn’t carry much weight in your decision.
