One Visit to the Math Museum – You’ll Be "Hooked on Mathematics" for Life

Perhaps one of the best things a parent can do is get their kids interested in math. Why do you ask? Because basic math skills are necessary for everything, and in our high-tech age, the more math your kids, teens, or young adults learn, the better job they will be able to get. Not to mention the fact that there is a shortage of engineers, computer scientists and other high-tech jobs, which will likely continue for a long time.

Having a strong academic foundation in math gives your child an edge for higher paying jobs. This is good news for parents. This means your child will be successful when they grow up. Now the next question is how do you get your kids interested in math? Well, that’s easier said than done, and hopefully they’ll have a great after-school math teacher to help them develop a curiosity for this niche.

Another idea is to create more mathematics museums. And if you happen to live in New York, you’re in luck. In fact, there is a gentleman who is building an incredible math museum. There was an excellent article in the science section of the New York Times published on June 28, 2011 titled “One Math Museum, Many Variables” by Kenneth Chang. The article stated;

“For anyone who finds math incomprehensible, boring or pointless – Glen Whitney, a former math professor who used his quantitative skills in a hedge fund, wants to prove you wrong. He expects tens of thousands visitors visit his Mathematics Museum, opening in Manhattan next year, and leave invigorated by geometry, numbers and other mathematical notions – we want to expose the breadth and beauty of mathematics. He resigned in 2008 with ties with deep pockets and to make math fun and cool.

Wow, now he is a man who is definitely on the right mission at the right time for the future of this great nation. You see, students always do better in the courses they love and the ones they are interested in – once they find they love math or want to learn more, nothing will stop them.

Maybe Glen Whitney is onto something here. It sounds like a wonderful and awesome idea, and if you live in another state, you might be able to see if your local community is willing to put together such a project. Maybe Glen could sell you a franchise or share his concept with you. Not only will you be helping your own children, but also everyone else in your community. Please consider all of this and think about it.
