Finally, the Formula For Success (Yes, a Real Formula!)
It’s that time of year again: the season for resolutions. The new year is upon us and people are already preparing big promises for the new year and getting ready to faithfully follow them (for real, this time) at the stroke of midnight as the calendar changes…just like the last year, and the year before, and…
But on Ground Hog Day, nearly all of those well-meaning, heartfelt efforts are just a memory: Smokers start smoking again, runners hang up those barely-used new Rebooks, and 24-hour fitness gives way to 24-hour fitness. with Jack Bauer… 88% fail and return to where they were on December 31.
So the question arises: why do the overwhelming majority of us, even with the best of intentions, stop so far short of our goals?
Is it for lack of knowledge? Maybe, but it’s the information age and pretty much anything you want to know is just a few clicks and seconds away.
Is it for lack of opportunity? Maybe, but research shows that most Americans burn more than thirty hours a week in front of the television. So really, could too little time really be an excuse in most cases?
Now you have the frustrated, confused and defeated masses who fuel an eight billion dollar self-help industry to solve the mystery of chronic failure. And while some of the countless books and seminars do indeed offer original insight and new information, most are just recycled and repackaged centuries-old precepts.
And a profitable business will continue as long as people are still looking for the elusive, quick and easy “Magic Fix”. But the road to success is often slow and difficult. In fact, if everything that is written and spoken about how to succeed were distilled, it could be simply expressed by a simple mathematical formula…
s=d/r-1
The amount of success is equal to the amount of desire divided by the amount of resistance minus 1.
Here we can clearly see that if the resistance exceeds the desire even a little, it results in failure (a negative number). Conversely, the same goes for desire: success only requires just enough desire to overcome resistance (a positive number)
The hard truth is that people fail because they simply don’t have enough desire or they have chosen an unrealistic goal (too much resistance) or a combination of both.
Resistance comes in two forms: internal resistance and external resistance. Inner resistance (the invisible) consists of a set of mental/emotional obstacles that prevent taking the necessary steps to succeed. External resistance (the visible) is made up of the things, people and circumstances that block the way and oppose progress.
The trick, then, is to find ways to create a desire strong enough to overcome opposition to a goal. Nothing stokes the flames of desire more than emotion. It could be either positive; a desire to gain pleasure and satisfaction or negative; an urgent desire to avoid pain or discomfort… either way, the passion is engaged. Passion creates energy. Energy overcomes resistance.
For example, let’s say someone wants to lose ten pounds, we’ll call him Fred. Since losing extra weight is healthy and worth the effort, let’s set Fred’s desire level at a moderate level of 6.
But you can’t lose weight just by thinking about it, you have to do a little work, change some habits, feel some discomfort. To lose weight, we will set a resistance factor of 8.
S=6/8-1
S=.75-1
S=-.25
Oh oh, that won’t work. Fred doesn’t want to lose enough weight to sustain his march towards his goal. It will likely start out strong but eventually succumb to the opposing forces of laziness, inconvenience, and lack of interest.
But what if now we add a little more wood to that fire: an old friend walks in and bumps into a fat Freddie and says “Whoa! you really packed the lard, I remember when you were skinny, villain, Love Machine.”
Embarrassed, even a little ashamed, Fred regaining his pride is a great motivation and the power of his emotions is much more involved now. Looking good to your friends is a stronger reason to lose weight than just to be healthier.
In view of the new numbers:
S=10/8-1
S= 1.25-1
S= +.25
Desire is now a 10 and overcomes resistance just enough to allow Fred to cross the finish line.
On the other hand, Fred could just as well have achieved his goal by lowering the resistance. What if the gym was far away and his work schedule made it even more inconvenient to take the time to go there (r = 8). But then he discovers that simply parking his car half a mile from work and walking to his office will burn enough calories to eliminate that excess lard. The path to success is now easier with less opposition (r=4). Success is anything but assured.
Now you finally have it, the formula for success.
So whenever you set a goal, visualize yourself already there. Think about how good you will feel. Be excited and imagine enjoying the benefits of being successful, and in doing so, you will stimulate your desire.
Always remember that although every worthy endeavor meets opposition, know that if you really want something with enough strength, you will get it.
