SQL Reporting Services 2008 R2 Gauges – An Example of Over-Engineering

What is a gauge?

A gauge provides a linear or radial measuring device. In English, that means it looks like either an old-fashioned speedometer or tachometer on a car, or a thermometer or barometer.

Gauges belong to gauge panels

One of the reasons gauges are so powerful (or over-engineered, depending on your perspective) is that they live in gauge panels. They are basically just containers for one or more gauges. For example, you can create a radial gauge with a pink background and place it on a rectangular yellow background (the gauge panel).

Gauges can contain other gauges

Gauges would be quite complicated as simple standalone report items, but additionally one gauge can contain another. Again, a car analogy is helpful: in some cars, the speedometer contains a miniature tachometer (older readers will recognize this analogy). Do you really need this functionality in SQL Server Reporting Services?

All measurements are percentages

Perhaps the most complicated aspect of evaluating report items is that all measurements are relative to the size of the original gauge. So, for example, if you want a fairly large pointer taking up about half the size of the gauge, you would set the offset of it from the edge of the gauge to 50%.

It’s pretty simple, but gets a lot more complicated when you add labels (basically, bits of text floating around in a gauge). Rather than specifying that you want your label to be 20mm (say) from the top of the gauge, you instead specify the percentage of the overall height or width of the gauge that the label should be from the corner upper left. Sometimes it seems like you need a math degree to position labels correctly!

Indicators are also gauges

SSRS 2008 R2 also contains a new report element called indicatorbut it turns out they’re just simple gauges under the hood.
