How to Deal With Wayward Students?

After working for two years in the corporate world. Fate took its turn and I landed in an interview room being interviewed in front of the selection committee. Finally, I joined this school as an English teacher.

From the first day I was made aware of how the students in the room and also of their nuisance. I was quite excited to face the students. I told myself that I was no longer a beginner because I had already entertained many retards for almost 14 months, working as a Back-end Executive in an American KPO.

In the following days, I was able to distinguish the different categories of students. Over the next couple of months, I spotted a certain group of students who were mediocre students but very mean and ill-mannered. Their misbehavior has always brought tears to female teachers. They were too problematic to handle. At first I started giving them physical punishments, and to some extent they stayed under control. But, then I found out that the problem was solved and in my absence they came back in their own way. I sat and scratched my head for days. I failed miserably.

Then something hit my mind. I thought I should stay in the situation of a student or go back to my school years. If I did the same, what would result in punishment, how I want to be treated. Then in the back of my mind he said I should have been treated politely. Then I decided that I would do the same. So the next time I found a temperamental student, I confronted him, put him at ease, and counseled him. I motivated him, praised him for no reason and slowly and slowly I saw the change. Here are some tips I would like to share with the entire teaching fraternity:

1. Treat them like your own siblings or younger sons and daughters, and be patient as you would be with your loved ones.

2. They are the most coercive group and they needed our love and sympathy.

3. Praise them for no reason and let them gain your trust.

4. Assign them the tasks and make them realize their potential.

5. Make them feel special and unique.

6. Take time to talk to them individually and personally and let the conversation be informal. Slowly and slowly they will open up to you.

7. Once they are open, let them know that you are more than a teacher to them. You can do this by talking to them again and again and reminding them of their parents’ contribution.

8. Ensure them to discuss their problems or complaints, whether against your colleagues and assure them of all possible help. But, guide them and remove the myth that every teacher was against them and this can be done by talking to them in a polite way.

9. Reward them for their good works. You might end up spending pennies on them.

10. Try to create emotional attachments by assuring them to solve their personal problems as well.

I’ve tried them on my students for the last three years of my teaching career and I’m still the same. Believe me, I got great results. And I dealt with the most problematic students from my previous school and had the chance to guide them into the category of decent students. My former school colleagues were amazed by the results.

Remember they are like the wings of butterflies, very delicate if we can handle them carefully they can fly higher and travel miles but at the same time if they are broken they can never fly .
