## I Just Cleaned the Gutters, But They’re Still Overflowing

When you see your gutters overflowing with water, you are both frustrated and perplexed, especially if you are diligent about cleaning or having your gutters cleaned. Wondering how can this happen? Don’t blame yourself, it’s not your fault in most cases.

There are several reasons gutters overflow, in addition to being clogged with debris.

- Gutters that have moved away from fascia boards create a dip or low point. This low point allows water to accumulate and then spill onto the ground.
- Badly sloped gutters do not allow water to pass quickly to or through the downspout.
- Downstairs or downstairs gutters that have 1 or more downspouts (from the top gutters) flowing into them create an overabundance of water, too much for the downspout (usually a 2″x3″ downspout) can adequately handle.

Here are some tips to eliminate the conditions mentioned above.

- If you can climb a ladder safely, inspect the dashboard. If you can’t, have a professional inspect the gutter and fascia. If the fascia is solid, just add hidden hangers and lift the sag area. Secure with 1 1/2″ slide screws. If the fascia is rotten, temporarily remove the gutter and also remove the rotten fascia. Once the fascia is replaced, hang up or reinstall the gutter with a step appropriate.
- If you suspect the gutter is pitched incorrectly, place a small (12″) torpedo level on the gutter. The level will indicate whether the gutter is properly pitched or not. If necessary, readjust as needed.
- As home designs become more complex, this problem is more common. If downstairs downspout is 2″x3″, have it removed and replace with a 3″x4″ downspout. Mathematically, a 2″‘x3″ provides 6 square inches of gutter relief. However, a 3″x4″ downspout provides 12 square inches of gutter discharge, doubling the amount of water going through the downspout. In almost all cases, a 3″x4″ downspout solves this problem.

Having a free-flowing gutter system will effortlessly manage rainwater from your roof to the ground or underground drains. It also gives you peace of mind knowing that rainwater from your roof won’t compromise your home’s foundation, rot siding, sills or trim, or wash away your flower beds.

The next time it rains, take a moment to inspect your gutters. I hope you will be pleasantly surprised.
